The Gauhati High Court has issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the construction of the GNB flyover.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice N. Unni Krishnan Nair, heard a PIL filed by Mahesh Deka and others.

The petitioners contested the Assam government decision to construct two arms connecting the elevated corridor/road on GNB Road, citing environmental concerns and heritage tree destruction.

The petitioners raised two key environmental concerns: the construction threatens 100-year-old trees around Dighalipukhuri pond and the potential ecological damage.

On behalf of the government, the Advocate General assured to explore alternative solutions and said the Chief Minister’s office had promised protection for the heritage trees.

Thereafter, the Court ordered issuance of notice to the respondents including the State of Assam, and listed the matter for November 13, 2024.
