Gauhati High Court: The petitioner, North East Eco Development Society in the present Public Interest Litigation petition raised an issue regarding water logging in Guwahati city during the monsoon season. The Division Bench of Vijay Bishnoi, CJ., and Suman Shyam, J., granted ten days’ time to the respondents to file counter to the present petition.

The Court noted that the problem of water logging in monsoon season in Guwahati city was not addressed by the authorities concerned in a proper manner for a long time.

The Court also noted that the response on behalf of the State of Assam, represented through the Additional Chief Secretary, Forest & Environment Department, Assam, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Revenue and DM Department, Chief Executive Officer, Assam Disaster Management Authority and the Divisional Forest Officer, Kamrup Division, had not been filed till now.

The Court opined that the present issue was directly related to the public at large and thus, it was expected that the respondents should file their response within the stipulated time, detailing out the steps that have been taken by them to deal with the problem of water logging in Guwahati city.

The Court granted ten days’ time to the respondents to file counter to the present petition.

The matter would thus be listed after ten days.
