Justice Tarun Chatterjee


Former judge of the Supreme Court and chairman of Uttar Pradesh Human Rights Commission, Justice Tarun Chatterjee, passed away this morning.

He was born on January 14, 1945 to former Calcutta High Court judge and Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court, Justice Purshottam Chatterjee.

He enrolled as an Advocate in 1970 at Calcutta and practiced in the High Court in Civil, Criminal and Revenue cases. He was appointed as a permanent Judge in the Calcutta High Court on August 6, 1990 and took oath as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on January 31, 2003.

Justice Tarun Chatterjee was elevated as a Supreme Court Judge on August 27, 2004 and demitted office on January 14, 2010.

Following his retirement, Justice Chatterjee was appointed as Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission in October, 2013.

He was married to Kumkum Chatterjee. His son Aniruddha Chatterjee is currently a Practicing Advocate at the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Digambar Chatterjee, a Judge of the Calcutta High Court during the British Era, was the great grandfather of Justice Tarun Chatterjee.
