Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital , MYH Indore, Madhya Pradesh has become the first government hospital in the country to introduce advanced CAR-T therapy for the treatment of patients suffering from blood cancer . This facility is a historic step towards strengthening the state’s health infrastructure and promoting high-level health services. A technology called chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) can prove to be effective for patients who do not benefit even after bone marrow transplant. For the process of CAR-T therapy, the patient’s blood sample has been taken first. Under this, the white blood cells of the patient suffering from B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are collected by apheresis machine. After this, these cells will be genetically modified so that they can bring special chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), which have the ability to identify and destroy cancer cells. After the modified CAR-T cells are transplanted into the patient, they effectively eliminate tumor cells. With the introduction of this facility in MYH, MYH has become the first hospital in the country to provide this facility at the government level. The cost of immunotherapy here is approximately Rs 30 lakh, which is very less compared to the approximately Rs 4 crore required for the same technique in the US.
