The Duolingo English Test (DET) will introduce new individual Subscores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening, in addition to the existing integrated Subscores for Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production from July 1, 2024.

According to DET, these new individual Subscores will provide universities with a clearer understanding of a student’s language abilities in real-world academic contexts and help students identify their core competencies.

After taking the test, applicants will receive a score report showing both their overall score and subscores. The overall score ranges from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments and is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the global standard for language proficiency.

The DET now offers individual subscores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening, allowing test takers to pinpoint their strengths and areas for improvement in each specific skill. Integrated subscores for Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production still provide a comprehensive view of overall language abilities. By combining individual and integrated subscores, institutions can gain a deeper understanding of a test taker’s language proficiency, mirroring real-world language use in academic contexts.

Individual subscores are calculated based on performance in each skill area. The overall score is the average of these individual subscores, rounded to the nearest 5.

Likewise, each integrated subscore is now the average of its corresponding two individual subscores. For example, the literacy subscore is calculated from the average of the reading and writing subscores.

After scoring and review are complete, test takers will receive an email notification. They can then log in to their account at to view their detailed score report. Candidates should be aware that integrated subscores calculated before July 1 are not directly comparable to those generated after the update, and it is not possible to convert old integrated subscores to the new ones.
