The Supreme Court adjourned on Monday the bail petition of former JNU scholar and activist Umar Khalid, who was arrested in September 2022 for his alleged involvement in cases related to the Delhi Riots 2020.

The Bench of Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice Bela M. Trivedi passed the order after taking in consideration the adjournment letter circulated by the counsel for the petitioner.

The Delhi Police had arrested Khalid in September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

He was charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly and several Sections of the UAPA. He has remained behind the bars since.

Khalid had moved the top court of the country against the October 2022 order of the Delhi High Court, which had denied bail to him.

The arguments in the High Court had gone on for more than 20 days.

Khalid had previously approached the High Court challenging the dismissal of his bail application by the Karkardooma court in March 2022.
