The Chhattisgarh High Court has dismissed a petition by Sister Mercy, a teacher accused of abetting a Class VI student’s suicide. The court condemned corporal punishment as cruel and inconsistent with a child’s right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution. Despite arguments from the petitioner’s counsel that the teacher only followed routine procedures, the court upheld the FIR and chargesheet, stating that such matters require thorough examination in a trial.
