Cardiff University has joined a UK-wide university network of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) expertise established by the Alan Turing Institute.

One of 36 universities selected for the Turing University Network, Cardiff brings significant research capacity in data science and AI drawn from its academic schools, innovation research institutes and strategic partnerships with industry.

Collaborative research opportunities, access to funding, increased visibility and knowledge sharing are expected to be among the benefits of membership to the pilot network, which is set to grow later this year.

Professor Jonathan Gillard, Deputy Head of the School of Mathematics and Cardiff’s Turing University Network Lead, said: “We’re excited to further strengthen our long-standing relationship with the Alan Turing Institute by joining the Turing University Network.”

Membership signifies Cardiff is a leader in data science and artificial intelligence research and is testament to the significant contributions we’ve made in applying these disciplines to real-world challenges in automation, healthcare, manufacturing and natural hazard warning systems among others here in Wales, across the UK and overseas.

Professor Jonathan Gillard
“The partnership will help us further develop these expertise and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation across the Institute’s broader networks of universities and research institutions.

“I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”

The Alan Turing Institute is a collaboration between universities, government, and industry, and works closely with partners from these sectors to deliver its research agenda. It provides training and education programmes in data science and artificial intelligence to help develop the next generation of researchers and practitioners in these fields.

The network is a key component of The Alan Turing Institute’s new strategy, which aims to change the world for the better with data science and AI.

It supports the Institute in achieving its three ambitious goals to:

advance world-class research and apply it to national and global challenges
build skills for the future
drive an informed public conversation
Donna Brown, Director of Academic Engagement at The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re delighted to launch a new UK-wide university network of data science and AI expertise via the Turing University Network.

“The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.”
