The Calcutta high Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed praying for a direction upon the respondents/State to consider the Petitioner’s representation and compulsorily include the subject of Bengali as the second language in all Urdu medium schools in the State of West Bengal.

The petitioner, who is the Chairperson of Muslim Women Resistance Committee.

The petitioner stated that she is a minority leader of a political party in the State of West Bengal and she has studied in a Urdu medium school, wherein there was clear emphasis on Urdu and nothing else and subject of Bengali was never included even as a secondary subject, for which she had to face innumerable hardships and road blocks.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice T. S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya are of the view that no positive direction can be issued, as sought for by the petitioner since it is a policy decision to be taken by the State.

Therefore, the Bench disposed of the petition by permitting the petitioner to pursue her representation before the authorities, which was given only on 9th June, 2023.
