The West Bengal government, specifically the state education department, has announced that it will not comply with the new guideline from the University Grants Commission (UGC) discontinuing the MPhil degree. The UGC had issued a notification warning students not to enroll in MPhil courses offered by universities as they are no longer recognized. The state education department stated that it will follow its own independent education policy and will not accept the UGC's directive. However, legal experts believe that the state government may not have many legal options and will eventually have to accept the commission's recommendations.
