Australia announced an increase in the required savings for international students to qualify for a visa, setting the minimum at A$29,710 ($19,576), beginning from Friday, May 10, 2024. This marks the second hike in roughly seven months, following an earlier increase in October, 2023 from A$21,041 to A$24,505.

The government also issued warnings to several educational institutions about engaging in fraudulent recruitment practices. These measures are taken to tighten the student visa rules to manage the unprecedented levels of migration that have surged following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in 2022, which have intensified demand in an already tight rental housing market.

In March, 2024, the government raised the English language requirements for student visas and has been implementing measures to prevent settings that enable students to extend their prolong stay. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil reported that 34 educational providers were issued warning letters for engaging in “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices.” She stated that if these institutions are found guilty, they could face up to two years in prison and a ban on recruiting students.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated that dodgy providers have no place in their international educational sector. These actions will help weed out the bottom feeders in the sector that seek to exploit people and trash the reputation of the sector.

International education is a major export industry for Australia, contributing A$36.4 billion ($24 billion) to the economy in the 2022/23 period.

Record levels of migration, largely fueled by international students, have placed significant pressure on the government as rental prices are soaring nationwide. Net immigration surged by 60% to an all-time high of 548,800 in the year leading up to September 30, 2023.

The government anticipates that its policies could reduce Australia’s migrant intake by half over the next two years.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated that they are significantly reducing migration levels- they are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia’s history, outside of war or pandemic.
