In the AP 4th Class EVS textbook, eleven lessons have been incorporated on various themes like Family, Plants and Animals around us, Our body, Food, Water, Shelter, Travel, Relations, Games and Recreations etc. In order to reinforce the concepts, several projects and activities are given to inculcate scientific temperament.

Questions are framed for each lesson to recapitulate the conceptual understanding and to achieve competencies required for project work, drawings and model makings. Each lesson is provided with eye catching illustrations to engage the children. The key concepts of the lessons are included under key words and the salient features of the lessons are given under the title “What we have learnt” for the review of the important concepts. An effort has been made to relate the scientific concepts with the real-life events thereby developing and promoting scientific temperament.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh initiated a slew of measures to bring in remarkable changes in the school education. The Government is introducing different kinds of schemes to fulfil the dreams of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian constitution who believed that the development of society is possible through education only.

As a part of bringing in qualitative changes in school education, the Government has decided to bring in reforms in the curriculum. So it is guided that design new textbooks from class 1 to 6 with international standards. At the primary school level, children have a direct connection with their family and surroundings. As per the instructions of the National Educational planning draft 2019, – text books should be with in the experiential orbit of the child.

The text books are prepared mainly keeping in view about the learning principles recommended by APPEP, along with the recommend actions of Right to Education Act – 2009, APSCF-2011 and National Curriculum Frame-2010. Environmental Science is being implemented as a subject at the primary level from 3rd class onwards. Children start responding to the world around them by the age of 8.

Children try to know and question about everything with their own natural aptitude. It is the responsibility of the school to encourage the natural enthusiasm of the children. This must be supported by the textbooks. Hence the new textbooks ‘Our world’ have been designed on activity based teaching and learning. By studying EVS, children can develop processing skills.

This is the foundation to develop scientific perspective. Hence newly designed EVS textbooks give priority to constructive learning. Though learning is an individual activity at the primary level, scope will be given to acquire knowledge by sharing their experiences in groups. So they are prepared to give opportunity to the children for peer learning.

The previous textbooks are time constraints as they are heavily contextual based. To overcome this, calculate the exact working hours in total school working days. Based on these working hours weightage on the content is reduced. So, the teachers are able to allot adequate time according to the pace of learning of the child.
