8 Deep Evidence of Earth’s Formation of the Moon
Recent research reveals evidence of a massive collision deep within Earth’s interior more than 4.46 billion years ago , shedding light on the formation of the Moon and the planet’s evolution . A massive impact resulted in the formation of molten rock which then coalesced in space to form the Moon . Two continent-sized blobs (large, dense regions) within the Earth’s mantle , one beneath Africa and the other beneath the South Pacific, are thought to be remnants of this ancient collision. These blobs, denser than surrounding bodies, may have been created by the collision between early Earth and a Mars-sized object called Theia. It is believed that the Moon may have been formed due to Theia’s collision with Earth and material may have remained in the lower mantle. Computer simulations support the idea that most of Theia was absorbed into the Earth, forming these blobs, while the residual debris formed the Moon. These blobs are about 2% of Earth’s mass, which is twice the mass of the entire Moon. The increased density in the droplets is attributed to the high iron content in them, similar to moon rocks.
