1 Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is working on developing a brain-computer interface in the orbital laboratory

India’s first astronaut on the International Space Station, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, is working on developing a brain-computer interface in the orbital laboratory. US space agency NASA said in a blog post that Shubhanshu Shukla, a member of Axiom Space Mission-4, along with a co-astronaut from Poland, studied the use of infrared technology to record brain activity in the construction of a brain-computer interface in the Columbus laboratory. The “Thoughts Over Gravity” experiment explored how astronauts can use their brains to control or communicate with computers in space, especially in challenging low-gravity conditions. Earlier, Shubhanshu tried to understand how small aquatic animals survive in a variety of harsh climates, including microgravity, in the Destiny laboratory module on the space station. He also observed muscle cell stem cultures through a microscope to understand the muscle repair process in weightlessness. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, along with three other astronauts from the USA, Poland and Hungary, are on a 14-day scientific expedition aboard the International Space Station under the Axiom-4 mission.

11 Indian scientists develop supercharged green energy material

Bengaluru scientists, in collaboration with Aligarh Muslim University, have developed a next-generation energy storage material that dramatically boosts the performance of supercapacitors . At the heart of modern energy storage is the supercapacitor – a device that can quickly store and release large amounts of energy, making them crucial for powering everything from mobile devices and electric vehicles to renewable energy systems. A team of Indian researchers led by Dr. Kavita Pandey at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Science (CeNS), Bengaluru , an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, focused on silver niobate (AgNbO₃) , a lead-free and environmentally friendly material with excellent electrical properties. They injected a rare-earth element called lanthanum into silver niobate nanoparticles, known for their beneficial electronic properties. This caused the silver niobate nanoparticles to shrink, providing more surface area for energy storage. Lanthanum improved the material’s ability to conduct electricity, speeding up energy charge-discharge cycles. An asymmetric supercapacitor prototype made from this material was successfully used to power an LCD display, indicating its potential for real-world applications.
