Delhi Pollution Control Committee submits report on pollution into the Yamuna

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), in its response to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) notice, disclosed before the Tribunal that it had carried out an inspection of the stretch of River Yamuna near Palla (Ghat No 4) and collected samples from three points.

The sample analysis report revealed that the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) of Drain No 8, which originates in Haryana and discharges wastewater into the River Yamuna, had a high pollution load affecting the water quality of the river.

The Principal Bench, comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Arun Kumar Tyagi, and Expert Member Dr A Senthil Vel , taking note of the high pollution load in Drain No. 8, impleaded the State of Haryana and the Haryana State Pollution Control Board as additional respondents in the matter.

The NGT granted six weeks’ time to the newly added respondents to file their reply. The matter has been listed for hearing on February 21, 2025.

The NGT had taken suo motu cognizance of a news item regarding the death of thousands of fishes in the Yamuna in Delhi’s Burari.

The NGT registered the matter as an original application and issued notices to the parties concerned.
