Becoming an IAS officer is a cherished dream for many Indians, with countless students dedicating years of rigorous preparation and making immense sacrifices to secure this prestigious position. However, some exceptional individuals, like Dr. Tanu Jain, choose to chart a different course after achieving this dream. Dr. Jain, a highly accomplished individual, served as an IAS officer for a few years. Despite this, she made the bold decision to resign and explore a different path. Her journey inspires many others to pursue their goals passionately while staying open to redefining their life’s purpose.


Dr. Tanu Jain, hailing from Delhi’s Sadar area, has been a bright student since childhood. A graduate of Cambridge School, she pursued a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Subharti Medical College. While many aspire to become doctors, Dr. Jain envisioned serving society on a broader scale. During her dental studies, she decided to prepare for the prestigious UPSC exam, a journey that would redefine her life.

The UPSC journey


Dr. Jain cleared the UPSC prelims in just two months during her first attempt but couldn’t clear the mains. Undeterred, she persevered and, in her third attempt in 2014, secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 648. She joined the 2015 IAS batch, marking the beginning of a new chapter.

A remarkable career as an IAS officer


Over seven years, Dr. Jain held various key positions and gained widespread recognition for her proactive governance. Her work focused on healthcare reforms, education, and rural development, touching the lives of countless people.

A bold decision to resign


Despite her success, Dr. Jain felt a calling to engage with society more directly. After seven years of dedicated service, she resigned from her dream job to pursue this purpose. Her decision was fueled by a desire for greater personal growth and impact.

A new chapter of social service and mentorship


Post-resignation, Dr. Jain devoted herself to social initiatives, motivational speaking, and mentoring UPSC aspirants. She founded her own coaching institute, Tathastu ICS, to guide and mentor aspiring civil servants. Through her institute, she provides invaluable support and insights to UPSC candidates, blending her personal experiences with practical advice to help them navigate the rigorous examination process.

Her motivational speeches and pragmatic approach have made her a prominent figure on social media, where she has amassed a following of 927k on Instagram. Beyond coaching, Dr. Jain actively participates in writing, conducting mock interviews, and equipping candidates with effective preparation strategies.

Her career transition


Dr. Jain said, “While civil services were fulfilling, after working diligently for seven and a half years, I wanted to address the challenges of UPSC preparation. Having faced these struggles myself, I felt the need to give back and empower others. Life is about growth, and with my husband also in civil service, I felt confident to take this risk and start anew.”
