Karnataka HC quashes FIR against Tejasvi Surya in a matter concerning spreading of fake news regarding farmer’s suicide

Karnataka High Court: While considering a plea filed by sitting Member of Parliament from Bangalore South constituency, Tejasvi Surya, wherein he had prayed for quashing of FIR filed against him for allegedly spreading fake news regarding the suicide of a farmer in Haveri district; the Bench of M. Nagaprasanna, J., quashed the said FIR.

In November 2024, Tejasvi Surya had shared an article claiming that a farmer had died by suicide after discovering his land had been taken over by the Waqf Board. The post was later deleted after it was revealed that the claims were unfounded. The police had registered a suo-motu case under Section of the (BNS) for spreading fake news.

After hearing arguments presented by the parties, the High Court had reserved its order on the plea.
