The petition by the BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari seeking re-assessment of the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) figures in West Bengal for the upcoming panchayat polls was dismissed by the Apex Court today.
A bench comprising of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala said that it cannot authorities from holding the elections.
The bench stated that it is aserious issue to interrupt an election, which they shall not do.
The leader of opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from BJP challenged a March 28 High Court order of the Calcutta High Court that had refused to entertain his plea. in the Apex Court.
The leader in the PIL had argued that there could not have been two separate yardsticks and so the current population figure of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State should be arrived at based on the household survey,like it was for OBC.
The counsel for Adhikari said that there was still time as the elections were due only in July.
